You should be able to create a backup to USB2.0 drive of your content

from an older PPC Mac; the files could be read by applications or made

to be opened by later apps (or converted to future ones, if possible.)

The limits to USB rotational drives and/or flash USB had been related

to the inability of the OS X to boot older Macs from those drives. The

files themselves should be OK to be read from said drives.

You may need to be sure to choose 'ignore ownership' where applicable

on drives where old user accounts may stifle access to their content. Or

create a duplicate of those old files on another drive, convert as needed

to a more recent application. You can make a duplicate of the entire old

drive with a clone utility. SuperDuper, CarbonCopy, or Disk Utility can

make great duplicates. Disk Utility can make a disk image. Other apps

could be tried to see if you could save-as or convert to newer version.

Good luck! 🙂
